19th C. Ladies Opera Gloves.

The gloves come in a papier-mâché box with a  beautifully hand-painted Japanese motif, measuring 7 ½” x 7 ½”. Slight damage to the lip of the box.

The box contains 2 x pairs of Ladies kid opera gloves, one labelled “made specially in France for Peter Robinson Ltd, Oxford Street, W”.

The gloves are for a small hand, 1 pair 20” long, the other 21” long, made from hair sheep leather. There is slight damage and age staining, but at well over 100 years old , they are in remarkable condition.

Peter Robinson was a chain of department stores with its flagship store being situated at Oxford Circus, London. Founded in 1833 as a drapery, Robinson bought up nearby shops on Oxford Street to create a department store. In 1865 he expanded into Regent St.
