19th C. Surveyor’s Level.

A surveyor’s optical level from the late 19th Century.
The label inside the lid states the maker is E Davis, manufacturer of Mining, Surveying & Engineering Instruments. 22 Albion Street, Leeds.
2 hand written dates (probably dates of service back at the factory) are for September 30th 1897 and also 20th June 1900.
Cased in a mahogany box, which is in generally very good condition showing remarkably few scratches and scuffs, considering its age. There is a lock, but no key. Brass belt fastenings on each end of the box.
The level itself has no tripod, but comes complete with a Troughton & Simms graduated horizontal circle, interchangeable vertical or horizontal eye pieces, and original clip-on mirror (cracked).
