Description
James Joseph Hicks (1837–1916) was a highly respected British scientific instrument maker operating out of Hatton Garden, London. His company specialized in high-quality high quality scientific instruments, including military-grade pocket or prismatic marching compasses. These were widely issued to officers during the late Victorian era and throughout World War I.
The stamp on the brass face features a “Crow’s Foot” (or Broad Arrow) engraving, which denotes official British military property.
A fitting on the base would mate with a tripod.
